Dorothy grew up in old Valdez in the 1950’s. There was no radio, TV, or cell phones for distraction. She learned to knit, crochet and sew from her mother. She was always interested in creating things. While working pipeline construction she wanted to paint pretty Alaskan pictures, so she took a beginner’s photo class. She fell in love with black and white photography, built her own darkroom, and eventually taught photography at Prince William Community College.

During her teaching career, she put her creation aspirations on hold. Since then she has been creating a variety of projects. She calls herself a fiber artist creating baskets, bowls, doilies, starflakes, hot pads, scarves, bags, car/lap robes, afghans, candles and sea glass containers. She likes to break rules, recycling, upcycling, and reusing, always trying something new by mixing and matching. Her three R’s are recycle, repurpose, and reuse. She has taught sewing and crocheting. She continues to ask herself, “What can I do with what I have?” Her objects are unique - no two alike - and meant to be used, abused and then washed for another day.
