Julie Rose Mason resides in beautiful Valdez, Alaska. Initially, Julie found herself in Valdez due to a Coast Guard relocation with her husband and two young children. Inspired by the beauty of Valdez along with its family like community, Julie and her own family bought a house and celebrated the birth of their third child, Dylan. Originally from Norfolk, Virginia, Julie has traveled all over the United States. She’s lived in many beautiful parts of the country including the Puget Sound region in Washington and the North Bay area in California. Drawing and painting have always been her passion even as a very young child. Preserving wildflowers and other wild things has become an integral part of Julie’s artwork and helps her survive the long, white winters.
Graduating from Old Dominion University, Julie obtained her BA in Graphic Design and minor in Art History while working as a bartender and server. Linear design, logos and resin art are all part of the ongoing creative processes seen in Julie’s expanding artistic endeavors. Substitute teaching in the Valdez city schools and instructing classes on painting and resin at Prince William Sound College are a few things Julie does currently for work in her small town.
Foraging and pressing flowers are a major influence and a therapeutic process associated with Julie’s work. Walking her dog (Flint) and exploring the outdoors with her family are essential to her thriving and creating in Valdez, Alaska. Getting out everyday and taking in the beauty of Prince William Sound and the Chugach mountains by sea or land help fuel her inspiration.
Foraged objects such as wood, willow, flowers and slate are all popular things you will find in Julie’s variety of Alaskan art that you can take back and enjoy as a small piece of this magical place for years to come.
